To Sir with Gratitude.
I owe a lot in life to my Atta & Mauvayya(Chalapati Raogaru). For all of our generation in the family, he was the inspiring Guru who helped us dream. Physics & sciences became my first love because of him. One can never forget  the way he taught difficult concepts. Resnick and Halliday for me is synonymous with mauvayya. "Basics", "Fundamentals", "Foundation" are the words that are etched in my memories. Still remember one very tough problem in inverse friction and inclined planes he explained.

Many moments will be etched in my mind. Remember the diwali celebrated with family...  The innovator that he was, I remember him making those tara juvva rockets. And then the real deal, kandi podi he used to mix  in a big vessel with the family gathered around to get their share.

I remember the duets he used to sing with atta. And one of his signature songs with his booming voice .. musafir hoon yaaron...mujhe chalte jaana hain

I remember it was two days before the dreaded EAMCET exam and I had some nagging physics doubt, which of course no book or friend could help me with.  I called and went to see Chalpati Rao Garu at his home.  He had said "Oh sure come over".  When I got there I realized I was interrupting some kind of dinner party.  He still took the time to sit with me and explain the doubt I had...that is indeed true devotion to teaching!  So remarkable.  Needless to say that question showed up on the exam...

Chalapati Rao sir was always looking to help his students..I absolutely loved the fact that he never expected us to memorize any formula..everything can be derived from the basic laws of Physics..I remember this being such a mind blowing concept for me where for years, we were expected to memorize (mug) formulae and facts whether we understood them or not.
His grasp and the depth of his knowledge was unmatched and I can safely say he was the best physics teacher I ever had.
But what I will remember most about him is his soft and kind nature. I went to GT for two years and I don't recall a single time he raised his voice or lost his temper. His patience and
humilityis what I remember about Challapati sir the most. RIP sir. Forever your student.

For the past two days, I was getting messages from many people about “Master garu”, most of them ending with “Rest in Peace”. I just cannot associate the word “REST” with him. He was always vibrant and active even in his sleep. He was someone who visualized many things much before others.

Many people know him as a great teacher. However, he had other talents too. He was a college champion and the head of the photography club in St. Josephs, he could play the guitar and also did farming.

But above all, he was a great human being, who had extended his help to many people.

During the 4 decades of my association with their family, he and his wife Mrs. Rajya Lakshmi, helped us on numerous occasions.

When my father-in-law, his former teacher, was hospitalized and he came to know that water was not available, he brought water in the car and carried it personally to the ward, in spite of his hectic schedule. When I was undergoing surgery, he was outside the OP, ready to handle any emergency. He was instrumental in arranging my marriage and later my daughter's marriage.

And who am I ? I am a distant relative, remotely connected to his sister. But they owned me as their “First daughter”. I am only one among many !!

If he is the LIGHT that touched many lives then the OIL for it is his wife Mrs. Rajya Lakshmi.

I would like to derive inspiration from that great person instead of mourning his death.

My memories of a great teacher

Chalapathi rao garu was a great teacher..Have great regard for him. I studied in GT 87-89. Once I bunked some classes, and I was afraid Sir would tell my dad during the parent teacher meeting. But when my dad enquired, he looked at me and said , "I don't have any complaints against him"...Those words hit me so hard, that  I never   bunked  classes again...These kind of tutors are missing now..We owe a lot to you sir..RIP..

Physics and I have had long love affair.  It began some 3 years before I met Mr. Chalapati Rao in the late ‘80s.  I instinctively “got” physics and I think Mr. C saw that I got it, even though he was in the business of dishing it out in bite-sized pieces to help high school kids prepare for some intense college admissions tests.  This will sound insincere and bombastic, but I feel that if he were a conductor, I could play physics.  It was like that.  When I last met him, he joked that I used to argue with him a lot about physics and I think he meant it as a compliment.  I certainly take it as one.  But the most important lesson Mr. C taught me was not even remotely related to physics.

After what seemed at the time like a devastating exam result, I went to see him one evening to talk about it and formulate a new “attack plan”.  I was about 18 at that time, and like most 18 year olds had tunnel vision.  After reassuring me that he would help me in any way he could, he said something cryptic.  “It doesn’t matter [ ].  It really doesn’t matter that you didn’t get into xyz.”  I must have stared at him with an incredulous look on my face.   “How can it not matter?  Our entire professional relationship was solely based on you helping me get there!” I probably thought.  He must have seen the look on my face and said “what really matters in life [ ] is that you are happy.  It does not matter who you are, what you have and what you do.  Think of the goatherd who can whistle a happy tune while tending to his two or three goats.  He doesn’t have much, but he’s happy.  Whatever you do, always ask yourself “are you happy?””

It didn’t sink in right away, but it eventually did.  I went on to learn as much physics as I wanted to, had a rewarding career at a Fortune 100 firm as a physicist that enabled me to continue “playing” with entropy, bias and electromagnetism.  But all that doesn’t matter.  Mr. C taught me the most valuable lesson that perhaps I will ever learn, one that I mull on regularly and ask people closest to me about.  Are you happy?

Till we meet again.  I might have a question or two :)

A genius..mentor for hundreds..career maker for thousands..respected by even more..selfless…a workaholic..a musician and singer..ever positive..super confident..karmayogi..invincible..an inspiration..knows only how to give…….

He was many things to many people but for me, he was the Heimdall of our Asgard. That is how I have always thought of him, perceived him to be and that is what I will the miss about him the most - fiercely protective of the family and unmatched loyalty and devotion to whole extended family’s well-being.

Chalapathi mavayya was not a talker. All my conversations with him through the last 30 years, if had in quick succession would probably get over in a day. Not surprisingly enough, he did manage to squeeze in some fabulous advice in that 30 year day. Whenever I spoke to him during my high school years, he would only discuss the right approach to learning and understanding various topics in math, physics and chemistry. He was always concerned that more and more students were gearing themselves up to ace the tests than the subjects. When I expressed disappointment about my JEE results, I thought he would mirror the feelings but he actually gave me mini physics/life lesson. He said “Shilpa, life is like a pendulum. Today it has swung to one extreme but remember there is a restoring force called gravity which will try to bring the pendulum back to equilibrium. Of course, since the pendulum has mass, it will oscillate..that is life…So all you have to do is learn and execute to the best of your ability and enjoy the ride.” 20 years from that day, as I recall those words, I hope I have imbibed some of his wisdom in my life.

Some of my memories of chalapathi mvayya are not through my interactions with him but descriptions of his childhood by a person who considers him a father figure – my mother. Her voice is always laced with pride, love and affection when she recounts his childhood.  Of course, these memories only serve to increase the awe in which I hold him.

“Shilpa, drink your milk. Ammamma told me that as a baby, chalapathi mavayya used drink milk well and then sleep like Lord Venkateshwara – on the back and hands spread out. He is so strong”

“Chinnanniah could eat one full aratikaya gela in one go as a child, can’t you even eat one?”

“Shilpa, Chinnanniah always scored low in math. You see, he could do everything in his mind and wrote only the answers, skipping all steps. Inspiring? Now let’s see some steps from you”

“My chinnanniah can play any string instrument. He learnt one by himself and now he plays a lot of them. You should hear him sing, he sings Kishore Kumar songs well”

The more I reflect back, the more I think –we are indeed blessed to have been left such a legacy and it is for us to live up to that legacy for our future generations as he did for us.

To my Chalapathi Mavayya...with love

I attended GT long term medical coaching in 1989. We fondly called him Chelpai. There are two incidents i still remember Once he gave a tough physics problem and asked us to solve. Somehow I could finish it fast and was sitting. He asked me you gave up already? when I told him I solved it and gave him the answer, said it is wrong. But after he solved the problem and got the same answer he appreciated me very well. Then when I didn't get Eamcet in first attempt he came personally and gave me a pep talk. Really I am grateful to him .Such dedicated teachers are hard to find.He ran GT on passion without any financial expectations. We miss you a lot sir.

In the good old days of early '80s, in the sweaty, sleepy shores of Visakhapatnam this man saw the potential in ordinary crowds and helped a large population of kids to believe in themselves and their abilities to strike big in IITs and national institutes, leaving behind mediocrity. It's not about just money or leadership, people like Chalapathi Rao Garu taught truly for the spark in the young brains and the effort of inspiring teachers can never be repaid. I did not get a chance to spend more time with Mr Chalapathi Rao(Daddy) ,but I have a very fond memory of him. He came to our wedding all the way to Kolhapur from Vizag changing multiple buses. He did not know anything about the city ,but made it in time for our wedding. Me and Subodh still have kept the collection of CDs with the case he gifted us(from his own collection). That was so sweet of him! I still remember him telling me in our wedding that he will teach me singing ,but unfortunately we never got a change to do that

Chalapathi Rao garu was a remarkable man and a great teacher. He inspired me throughout my time with him both during the years at St. Joseph's college as well as GT. He was the kind of teacher that made you want to work harder just so that you can impress him. He was always very encouraging. I am grateful to have been his student.

I owe my life to you Sir.
Was a student of Sir’s first batch and had a thorough interaction for 2 years, 1980 & 1981. Just two years but many thoughts, incidents and lessons for recollection – that was the quality of time spent under him. Was told by many that it is difficult to get into Gangadhar Tutorials, since the entrance test would be too tough. Deliberated, prepared and was in 11th standard, when i approached Sir to enroll in his class. Sir noticed that i came alone and not with my father. So, no entrance test, no checking of 10th class marks, he enrolled me on the spot. Sir had this knack of gauging a student’s interest. Only partially lived up to his expectation though – did not qualify for IIT. Sir and i were to catch a bus to Coromandel Colony. We took a rickshaw and headed towards St.Joseph junction. i saw the bus when we were about 30 Mts away. Hurriedly, i was getting down the rickshaw to run and stop the bus for Sir. Bonus, i had a practical physics lecture. Sir was cool, puffing his cigarette. He held my hand, stopped me from getting down and explained that the diameter of the rickshaw’s wheel is ‘n’ meters (sorry Sir, i can’t recall that detail), and so is moving at a velocity of ‘m’ meters / min and that it would reach the bus much, much before than i would have by running ! We comfortably boarded the bus. And till date, whenever i need to hurry to catch something, i picture Sir and the rickshaw ! And off course, can’t forget the affectionate hug he gave some of us, when we made it through AP’s first EMCET ! i owe my professional career to him. Thank You SIR! You Live On !

Remembering you Sir.

I was a student in GT 1985 IIT batch.

Sri Chalapathi Rao Garu did a great service for us in our  youth.  He created this environment where it was cool to learn physics & math alongside some of the brightest minds I came across during my formative years.

Such an environment lifted up even a mediocre mind such as mine to a higher level that is not possible on my own.  The enthusiasm and love for learning he inculcated in me was addictive. I couldn't wait to go back for more.

For that I'm eternally grateful.

Thank you sir🏾.

Chalapati Raogaru - my teacher

My dad Dr. R.N.Someswara Rao of AU Engineering College, also a teacher, was the one that connected me to Chalapathi Rao garu's coaching classes. I was already his student in BSc in St.Joseph's college and the condition was that I was expected to work really hard and deliver whatever was asked of me by way of studies. Thus started my journey. I am sincerely appreciative of and extremely grateful for the quality of teaching and the kind of attention that I received while at Gangadhar Tutorials. Between his teaching and maam's sweet smile everytime when we entered, this became almost like a second home to me. Gangadhar Tutorials changed the future of Vizag and put it on the JEE map like no one else did or could. I've seen many teachers in my life but not even a handful with the kind of dedication that Chalapathi Rao garu invested in us. THIS is what gave me the confidence to face physics that otherwise seemed daunting until then. I passed out of AU in 1989 having done Electronics & Communication Engineering and last met sir in 1993 prior to leaving for the US. The location of Gangadhar Tutorials had changed and times had gone by but I still saw the same teacher that had taught me first years ago as a teenager; he still remembered me and wished me luck in my life. Great teachers are a rarity and more so are those that genuinely care for their students. I am indeed blessed and fortunate to have found a wonderful passionate teacher when I needed him the most. May his kind soul rest in peace. My regards and respects to maam and gratitude to the entire family for indirectly contributing to my life

In memory of Sir

I owe my clearing EAMCET in the first attempt in 1989 to GT. I remember taking immense pride in the fact that I was the youngest among my Engg college batchmates at REC, Rourkela (now NIT). Sir had an uncanny ability to instill confidence in his students by stressing on understanding the fundamentals before anything else. He made application of those fundamentals so easy post that. I apply this principle in everything that I do today, not just physics, and try to instill the same in my 5 year old son. So yes, the legacy passes on more ways than Sir would have imagined. It's been 28 years since I left GT, yet I am deeply saddened to write this note in memory of Sir. May his soul rest in peace. - Rituparna Maji REC, Rourkela (1989 - 1993) MDI, Gurgaon (2000 - 2002)

Memoir to Sri Chalapati Rao

GT is an essential memoir for majority of the student community hailing from Vizag in the 90s and Sir Chalapathi Rao is the first and foremost name that comes to anybody's mind - however remotely associated with GT. I have had the luxury of being tutored and mentored by this wonderful teacher during my Intermediate years and I am indebted to him and his organisations - GT and GJC for ensuring that my preparatory years are supported in the best possible way.

I am one among those privileged few thousands who had the opportunity to sit in his Physics sessions and it is definitely a sad moment to think of his demise. He will remain a cherished memory all my life...May his soul rest in peace !!!

To Chalapathi Mavayya(Uncle)with Love, Adoration, Gratitude, Respect and Legacy

First and foremost , he is my Chalapathi Mavayya. As it goes with maternal uncles, there is a sense of nearness and fondness which comes from the stories my mother told about her brother. As it goes, when I was born Mavayya used to tell “Veedi Kaalu chusthe okka football player laaga unnayi” . Well I did not play soccer well, however I did take up to running. He was very much interested in Cricket right from radio commentary days to the modern IPL. Those days I used to keep myself current with the Cricket scores, either thru Radio commentary or TV, he used to ask me the scores and we bonded over cricket . I admired his singing and still remember the duets Chinatta and Mavayya used to sing. Chinatta’s “Kanchi re, Kanchi re” or Mavayya’s Mohd rafi’s songs and his Cliff Richard’s “Living Doll” is to-die for. I admired his ability to play different sports such as Volley ball and Snooker. Later, I became a student of Gangadhar tutorials. I used to travel every holidays to Vizag. His Physics classes were mesmerizing. I got interested in Physics and I owe my Eamcet seat to Gangadhar’s coaching. His pep-talk had a transformational impact on students. He cared for each and every one of them. I did not pay much attention to my Intermediate first year exams and hence ended with below par scores. He emphasized the importance of preparation for each and every exam. I did pick up my scores in the second year and the ensuing Eamcet entrance and Indian Statistical Institute Entrance. I owe my sincere gratitude for where I am today. When I lost my father in 1994, Mavayya took the role of father. He was there with unconditional backing thru my thick and thin. Above all, he gave me the confidence that I can always count on my Chalapathi Mavayya as a fatherly figure and I owe my sincere respects. One remarkable trait, he demonstrated was the burning desire to leave a lasting legacy. He cared for the next generation and wanted students to be “left alone” so that they find their own destiny. He ensured that both parents and students respect the educational system. However he encouraged the parents to augment the students with creativity and a sense of individualism As much as I say Mavayya, I must say that I am very lucky to have a wonderful family with a very loving Chinatta and my cousins Kiran and Pawan.

My Mavayya(Uncle), Teacher, Father

My experiences with U V Chalapathi Rao(Chalapathi Maviah) start from my childhood when every summer we use to look forward to visiting him “his kandi podi “and “onion pesarattu “and playing with Kiran and Pavan. Then came the crucial part of EAMCET preparation when the teacher in him instilled confidence when I was tensed ,his lessons in organic chemistry ,nuclear physics and electricity which made physics a relatively difficult subject for a medical aspirant easy. The early morning classes which maviah used to take had made me geared up for my entrance exams. After the untimely demise of my dad in 1994 he became my father .He and Atta fixed my marriage ,made all preparations and stood by my mother and our family. In the last two years after shifting to Vizag my interaction increased even more .He was there in my clinic inauguration and every time when I wanted to visit him.He always took pride in the small achievements of myself and Dr Ramesh and we used to be ever ready to get praised by him. I miss his impromptu visits to my clinic, his medical science related doubts, company at the breakfast table and the baskets of Banginapalli mangoes which he used to hand over personally to me one basket after another. The last few days I was fortunate enough to be at his side ,but unfortunate that with the medical degree (which I joined because of him) I had to declare his end .It was really painful to see a legend passing away. I always very proudly introduce myself as Dr Srivalli -chalapathi Rao gari mena kodalu(sister's daughter) to many people in Vizag. The other day my daughter Srujathi asked me “ Amma Chalapathi tatagaru is a celebrity in Vizag even many of my class mates (school students) and most of the people in Vizag know him as a great teacher . My Uncle and Guru Chalapati Babai

I have the distinct honor of being Chalapati babai’s first student that potentially was the stepping stone for him later building several successful GT educational institutions. After finishing 10th grade at Jamshedpur my parents shipped me off to Vizag to babai(Uncle) and pinni(aunt). With new found independence and a healthy bank account, the first six months in Vizag were the best carefree years with me spending most of my time going to movies and hotels (no studies). Babai then sat me down and I will never forget his famous words. Entrust yourself to me with total trust and faith as well as follow my guidance to the letter of the law – I will take responsibility for you getting into IIT. I had my doubts, but very much wanted this (long story) carrot being dangled. I did as he asked studying under his tutelage for over 16 hours a day for some five months. I am also probably one of the few students that he taught not only Physics but also Math and Chem (after he self re-learnt these two subjects himself). He taught me right up until exam time. Lo and behold several concepts that he taught me helped me be part of IIT batch 1979-84. I owe my babai for the healthy start he gave to my career and will miss him dearly.

My Master

Sri. Chalapati Rao Garu ( I call him 'Master Garu') is a phenomenon. His method of teaching and tailoring it to individual student is amazing. I studied under him for roughly 18 months when I was in my teens. I knew nothing when I entered Gangadhar Tutorial. With his grace I have become a doctor. If not for him, I wouldn't be in this stage of life today. We were the lucky ones to learn closely under his guidance. He is the 'Dronacharya' for many students who were benefited by his tutoring. He had more confidence in the student than the student himself. If Master said you are 'in' its guaranteed. Madam was very kind and humble lady. She always remembered every one by name. Master is a "Kulapati" who taught thousands. He lives in our hearts for ever. My prayers with you all Madam,Kiran and Pavan. with great respects to Our Master Sri Chalapati Rao garu.

Homage to our teacher

Our homage to Sri Chalapathi Rao - teacher, mentor, guide to so many of us in our formative years. As President Kalam used to say - it is a teacher at a crucial stage in a student’s life who shapes the interest, career and destiny. For many of us that inspiration was most definitely Sri Chalapathi Rao. We all have vivid memories of Sir - taking us through concepts in Physics & Maths on the board, with chalk & duster in hand - in his own inimitable style. And developing that problem solving ability in all of us - as we sat on those long benches of Gangadhar Tutorials exchanging notes between us , while Sir walks around and giving us that spark to crack the problem. Those concepts, the problem solving ability and the focus he built in his students - have helped each one of us not just in academics but thereafter in career & life. His contribution to the cause of education & society is immense and we will be ever grateful. May his soul rest in peace. K Harishankar Student – Gangadhar Tutorials (1981-83) IIT Bombay 1983-87

My memories of the legendary teacher, Sri Chalapathi Rao sir

I was in the 91-93 (first) batch of Gangadhar Junior College. I have always loved his all-knowing smile that escaped through the corner of his mouth. He caught me talking at the beginning of class a couple of times, and when he caught my eye, I could see the slightest ever smile escape his face, and that was enough to keep me in line. He never said anything about it though. Three incidents stand out for me during those years of interaction: A math teacher would come from Bobbili to coach us on JEE Math. One time, a class was scheduled last minute, and I didn't know about it. When he found out, he sent a fellow student to our house to let me know. <> We had mock EAMCET a few days before the actual test, and after seeing the results, that I was happy with, he called me and said, I know you can do better. <> It so happened that a few years later, I was in the company of Chalapathi Rao sir and one of my school teachers Rohini madam. Not only did they recognize me, but, I remember them both agruing playfully over whose student I was. At that moment, it felt like I had achieved something in life. Sir, you inspired your students to do better, be it with a smile, a few words or a small gesture. You will always be a part of our lives. Kavitha Mangalagiri IIT Batch (91-93)

Wonderful wonderful stories! All teachers shape a few. But great teachers that have a transformative impact across generations are rare. Uncle is not only an inspiration to all he touched but to many more (possibly millions) a few degrees of away. Reading these stories is both uplifting and touching. Kiran Uppuluri Pawan Uppuluri while I didn't have the great fortune of learning from your dad directly, I have had the good fortune of seeing and learning from some of you who he has deeply influenced and I am amazed and thankful beyond words. AMC 1981 MBBS batch (first batch of students from Gangadhar Tutorials)

First of all ...Kiran and Pawan ... Thanks for creating a website like this... And sharing great family photographs . Sri Uppuluri Chalapati Rao garu was cousin to my mum, very dear to our family too. Myself and about 24 of our classmates (25 out of 125 in 1981 AMC MBBC batch ) belonged to the first batch of students from Gangadhar tutorials. He was instrumental in bringing out the inner talent and desire to succeed in every student. Besides his immense knowledge and thoroughness in Physics, maths and chemistry, he had a wonderful understanding in 'how to approach for an exam' .... Be it IIT, EAMCET, JEE.... He infused that methodical approach and preparation into students. Today... hundreds of students who studied under his guidance and inspiration are prospering in their respective fields across the globe.... It is a true reflection of his ability and dedication to student community and to the field of education. It was not just me who was inspired and supported by 'Chalapati mavayya' in my family.. even my mum... (when she was doing her MA , MPhil and PhD in Mathematics at Andhra University 1969...1977-80) received very affectionate support from him and his family.

Being a mother, leaving three small children behind , miles away and staying at hostel needed immense encouragement and support. Besides my dad, my grand parents...., Chalapati mavayya and family stood by her to accomplish the mammoth task. My mum still recaps on some of those challenges she faced through her years at University and support she had from people like UVC.

We can understand .... Physics... Chemistry ... Maths.... Students... JEE IIT... EAMCET..... ...... meant a world and space for UVC! But I have no words to express the dedication and hard work put in by my aunt Rajya Lakshmi. Within and outside family she had so many roles to play.... responsibilities.... Never, ever seen her loosing her 'cool', always kept us comfortable when we stayed in their house for coaching for months. I don't remember me taking any responsibilities whatsoever at their house.... apart from doing my job .... 'Prepare for exam'!!! I feel, we, the students of Gangadhar tutorials owe a lot to the two angels 'Kiran & Pawan' who shared their parents' affection and attention with us over the years right through their childhood! They always lived in a world of education and an 'extended family'! I feel lucky and proud to be associated with this family ! I certainly believe that my uncle UVC had taken 'Uppuluris' to the next level ... an example for generations to follow!!

I have known Chalapathi Rao garu first as my neighbor, next as my teacher and later as my brother-in-law. I fondly remember the days we watched world cup soccer (Maradona was his favorite player) and many Indian cricket matches at his house. We had many wonderful deepavalis in their house with homemade fire crackers. Kiran, Pawan and I grew up as the best of friends and they, their mom and my bavagaru were my second family even before I became an Uppuluri. To encourage us to stay home, he setup a badminton court in the side yard of MIG68 and also had a ping-pong table in the living room. I owe my career and so much in my life to my bavagaru. When I wasn't keen on going to GT for IIT & EAMCET coaching, Chalapathi Rao garu came to our house and convinced my family that it was a good opportunity. This is how he has been with all students- recognizing potential in them that they themselves were not sure of. In my eyes, what separated Chalapathi Rao garu from all other teachers was his understanding of the learning process across any subject. He didn't just teach us the subjects themselves, he taught us how to learn. This is what makes GT students so successful in their careers. It was also wonderful to know him as my bavagaru once Krishna and I got married - I proudly told people that we were related. This message is from all of my Kotikalapudi family - we will miss Chalapathi Rao garu dearly and are grateful for the years we had with him. He is an inspiration to us all. Uncle, as i called was the "Dad" of my close friend Kiran. I have spent many many hours in their home and there is this one incident that comes to my mind so vividly. I had just learnt to drive and right after Std X exams, one afternoon, while my dad rested (in those days essentially it was one car per family) I took the good old ambassador and drove off to meet Kiran and planned to ensure that i park the car back before my dad would need it to go back to work. i over estimated my skills, I reached kiran's house but did not now how to reverse my car to go back home. Uncle to my rescue , I thought but he in his most calm and composed self only said…"you have to undo what you did not do right. Thats why driving licenses are given at 18 years of age". An ideal father, a great human being, who has been so inspirational to so many students. May his soul rest in peace and may the family find all the strength to deal with his loss from every nuance of his life. Parveen Mehdi(Hosain)

From:  Vijaya Pratha (his first student)
From the earliest days of his tutoring

I have the distinct pleasure of being his first student outside his family - from the pre Gangadhar days. I recall distinctly the first moment I met mastergaru. It was in 1979 and I knew I had finally met the teacher I had unknowingly been looking for all my life! The tenacity and work ethic needed was impressed upon me from that first meeting when he told me what he expected from me. At 15 years of age, I was an outgoing individual who loved to talk and be around people - mastergaru was the one person I met who was completely different to anyone I had encountered before.

There was never any social conversation - about the weather or how I was / it was all about Physics and Math from day 1. But his sheer brilliance was enough appeal to keep me coming back daily. I would say it was a form of hero-worship / I had never met anyone who analyzed the world of Math and Physics the way he did for me. I watched him come alive as he talked about velocity or integration and this passion was so infectious and truly inspirational to be mesmerizing. Very few people know this but, mastergaru was SOOOO generous with his time. He saw me daily during the week for almost 1.5 years - 3 hours a day and never charged me a penny. How can I say what this man means to me? Over the years when I pray and offer gratitude for all the people in my life who shaped me - mastergaru comes right with my parents. He is singlehandedly responsible for who I am today in many ways. I went to him with the aspirations of becoming an engineer - and only wanting to study at IIT - a dream that was never fulfilled because it was never meant to be. Serendepitously the time under him has prepared me to be the physician I am today.

What I learnt in all those hundreds of hours with him was - how to pursue a goal with intensity and passion. How to analyse a situation - separate cause from effect and how to get to the root of the problem without getting bogged down by the details. How to take a test, how to prepare intelligently for a test and most of all, how to find the fastest way to a solution. I can without hyperbole and exaggeration state that I worked harder to please him than anyone else in my life. And, in doing so went through the rest of my 15 year of medical education and post graduate study in a state of high efficiency - able to minimize my work time and maximize the returns in all tests I have taken and continue to take since then. I will never forget the words he told me in one of our sessions - When you take an entrance, he said most people aim to do well. As the scores fall in any competitive test, majority are in the 60 -80th percentile where their admission is dependent on the overall number of seats and other factors used for separating people with the same score. "you want to aim to clear the 95th percentile where there is very little competition - and you are a shoo in - a winner without any chance of uncertainty". In other words be so far above the cutoff that you never need worry about it.

I am eternally grateful to his entire family for welcoming me into their home and sharing his time with me so unselfishly for all those hours. I have always felt the unspoken love and affection he had for me and my only regret is that I missed seeing him and spending time with him recently in India when I was there in January 2017. I know he is in a better place and much more comfortable than he ever was over the recent years. I am hoping to reconnect with him there and I will always carry in my heart the fondness and love a student carries for the teacher who so elegantly shaped their life by being present heart and soul at the time when they needed the most guidance. Sir, may you walk with God and be helped by all his/her angels in your journey beyond the flesh! I am a better human being because of you! You have kindled in me the flame of curiosity for the way things work and I continue to search for new frontiers in my life with this flame leading me to new horizons constantly. God Bless you and all who you have touched With eternal thanks. Vijaya

My Heartfelt Gratitude to SIR Chalapati Rao Garu

I owe my admission to IIT, 100%, to Sir Chalapati Rao Garu and my mother. Due to various life circumstances, I didnt take the IIIT-JEE after my 12th standard and had relocated to Hyderabad. Then, with less than 4 months to go and having not done any preparation, I was in dire need of help for JEE. My mother and myself moved to Vizag and requested Sir for help. It was supremely kind and generous of Sir to take me in at this late stage and not only did he start me on a program at Gangadhar, he also helped us obtain an apartment close to GT so we would be able to get maximize the time on learning. As I was so unprepared for JEE, he personally took great interest in teaching me what I needed to know and also took extra time out from his personal life and schedule to answer my questions.

I moved from completely unprepared for JEE to readiness, just because of the way he walked me through on every step, literally adjusting his approach on a day by day basis, selecting the problems I needed to work and selecting the problems I could ignore, and directing me on the next set of problems to attack. I cannot thank him enough for this particular style of teaching, directing and adjusting my progress on an almost daily level. This, combined with my mother making sure I was able to eat and sleep and get ready for the next session, I was able to write JEE successfully. A teacher who is able to put the needs of his students first, with an razor sharp insight into what the student is missing and how to take them to the next level, and the patience, kindness and generosity to help his students at every level they need help on, is a rare human being. My heartfelt gratitude to Sir Chalapati Rao, then, now and always. Ramakrishna Vetury (IITM 1995-2000)

Chalapathi Rao garu was a physics genius. He had a very different and great understanding compared to anyone else at that time. He definitely made Physics easier for me than it was before. The best part was his patience and humbleness. I never saw him angry or frustrated in those 2 years I studied under him. RIP!!

Dear Sir

Dear Mastaaru... I don't know how to put my feelings to pen, nor I try to be eloquent. I met you in 1981 when I took the entrance test to join JEE (IIT) coaching at Gangadhar Tutorials. On that rainy day I ended up doing odd problems when you asked me to do even ones from SL Lony. I thought I blew it with that blunder. Two weeks later a post card came saying I got selected to join GT. After some time I asked you how did I get in and you said that you liked my approach to the problems I attempted! Those two years were also very difficult ones for me, for I had to cook, clean, take care of my grandparents and uncle and study... I barely managed. In the end I did not get any rank in JEE. You took all of us to a movie and dinner at Apsara Hotel. You found out about my situation and were very sad that I never told you. You said: "I would have come to your house and coached you, why didn't you tell me?". I knew you would and I did not want to take your time like that when everyone else also needs you. You taught us how to learn on our own and till today it stays with me.

I taught science lab in 5th grade at my daughter's school and that is what I did! And that is how I teach my kids and others kids, even adults. That is your gift to all of us who were fortunate to learn from you. Many times you will stay just for one student who was taking long time to do a problem. You always said there is no shortage of time, let your mind think. In 1987 you even let me teach Physics at GT! That was an honor. I was nervous and you said just draw the inclined plane and arrows showing forces, when they see your beautiful diagrams they will fall under your spell! You took me to Tirupati, you made me stay at your house when I visited India in 1990. Every time I came to India I would meet you and could feel your affection for me the way you looked at me.

Just two years ago I brought my family to meet you when you visited California. Next two days you had more than 20 former students and taught all of us ways to help our children. You started with discovery of electron and Milikan's oil drop experiment, Bhor's model and moved to reaction kinetics and equilibrium. You rolled back time on us with chalk piece in hand, blackboard behind you and beaming enthusiasm to teach us how to teach and how to think. I kept those notes safely. My old notes are not there. But the memories are tucked in the inner depths of my being. When I joined nuclear engineering- you told me your advisor Sri Swami Ji was student of James Chadwick (the man who discovered neutron).

I feel you will be always there guiding me and giving me your blessings. I miss you ... you made a difference in this world, in all of our lives. Your legacy lives on.

Master garu changed the lives of thousands of students and mine.

I heard that Sir passed away, through many WhatsApp messages within 3 days. It was the most difficult one for me to react. In the strangest way it didn't matter - he remains in the memories that he has for the past 32 years and will remain till I live. My friend Balaji and I went for coaching in Inter 1st year to his home and later to the coaching center near KGH on the first floor. 4 months ago in Nov 2016 I showed the building to my younger son. Though I was a good student, but he made us better by an order of magnitude. I owe it to him and Gangadhar Tutorials my IIT admission and my engineering rank in CET and how it changed the rest of my life.

The batch of 84 achieved wonderful results for Gangadhar Tutorials -- 18 IIT ranks with the top rank being 15 (I. Ashok) and two of the top 10 in Andhra CET ranks (I Ashok was 1st and I was 4th in the state of Andhra Pradesh). He was a man ahead of his time, a visionary and an awesome person in many ways. He and Ma'm delivered wonders over the years. The atmosphere he created was electric - every single day we were excited for the problems we solved and miserable for the problems we couldn't solve whether these were given at Gangdhar Tutorials, Agarwal coaching books, Resnick Halliday, etc. I have remained friends with several of my batch students even today. I often wish my kids get anywhere close to that excitement to study.

Even today, every day, I am excited about what I do at work and is heavily influenced by Sir who never rested. Sir and Madam's memory of past students was/is amazing. A few years ago Madam and Sir visited our house, stayed with us nearly half a day. That memory will live forever.

I am sure he has already found a few ways to coach a few folks in the Heaven, whether it is Physics, or on how to approach Life or how to apply fundamentals to the problems in Heaven. Must be keeping a few people busy already!! - MN (Mogalapalli Nagendra Srinivas) Gangadhar Tutorials - 1982-84, IIT Bombay Mech 1984-88

 Memories of Mastergaru

I have been fortunate to have been associated with Mastergaru and his family right from my childhood. I remember him foremost as a loving uncle, before he became my teacher. I have many fond memories of him, some which I remember and some which my parents have narrated to me. He would bring a lot of toys for me when I was a baby, saying that toys were essential for child's development. He was very happy, when I joined the same school that his daughters had attended. He was a regular visitor to our house, for various occasions, especially for my birthdays.

As a student, I recall the "Irodov work sessions" very vividly. One of the best memories I have of him as a student, was celebrating his 60th birthday with his family and his students. He and his family were also instrumental in arranging my marriage. In fact, he personally received and hosted my husband's family at his house, when they had come to see me for the first time. When I look back at the time I spent with him, I can feel his constant presence and assurance throughout my life, till now, sometimes as an uncle, sometimes as a well wisher, sometimes as a teacher.

Even now, I can hear his voice ringing in my ears, giving me advice on various aspects of life. I strongly believe that his legacy will be taken forward by his family and his students. He may not be visible to us in person, but his life will always serve as example to me and the many people that he has touched during his lifetime.

My parents joined my sister for medical coaching in GT saying that was the best in Vizag. That’s the first I heard of Chalapati Rao garu. Eventually my sister topped GT that year and Sir came to my home to congratulate my sister. Meeting him in person had quite an impact on me. His calm demeanour, serious looks and firm answers convinced me that I should also become his student.

The way he explained Physics concepts (only he could) was par excellence. His teaching style was, short and focused sessions - covering one concept at a time. He also brought in a good mix of other lecturers to cover all the required areas. The dreaded "Organic Chemistry" also started becoming likable. I ran into him in the AU campus on the day of Eamcet. After dropping off Kiran, he said he will hang around to help last minute students get to the correct building! I don’t think we will see another institute like GT in the near future.

I don’t know if I would have achieved what I did without his help. Thank you Sir – we are forever indebted to you! Ajai Konda IIT (87-89)

My deep condolences to mastergarus family. I always have and will always be left with positive memories about 'sir'. He was loving and always knew the potential that existed in each of us even as we were enveloped with selfdoubt. I still remember him coming to our house to talk to my family about his total confidence in me ( when I was at a phase lacking in my own abilities ).When you look back, you realise today how commited he was in his students to invest his own personal time (which he could have spent with his family ) in our welfare. For that I am eternally grateful. I am so glad that I got the chance to speak to him in 2015. I was his student from 1981 april to 1982 april.and was part of his second batch of students at Gangadhar tutorials, where in the midst of the rigors of preparing for an entrance exam we really had so much fun and refused to miss a single session come rain or extreme heat.Proudly got accepted into both engineering college and AMC ( thanks to his guidance ).Currently am in NYC as a Pediatrician in private practice lots and lots of love and regards for my teacher Madhu
From Sudesh Kannan:

Matha Pitha Guru Deivam” (Sanskrit), “Mother Father Teacher God”.
This order for reverence comes to us from ancient Hindu texts, the Vedas,
First comes the mother (Matha or Mata) who gives us birth. Next comes the father (Pitha or Pita), because it is the mother who guides us to our father. Our parents then takes us to the teacher (Guru), and it is the guru, through his or her teachings, shows us the way to God or self-awareness or our real self.

I was very fortunate to have a Guru in Sri Chalapathi Rao aka Master Garu (1941-2017) as a high school senior. He was a retired Physics Lecturer from St. Joseph’s College for Women in Visakhapatnam. He was the founder and director of Gangadhar Tutorials, famous in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh for training high school students for competitive college entrance exams.

Master Garu taught me these three valuable life principles:
1
. Learn, Practice and Share
2. Fulfillment is more important than accomplishments
3. Love and respect are all we can leave behind.

Message: I am from batch MBBS 90.  Chalapati Rao Sir Touched the hearts of many Vizagites for a couple of decades. GT remained to be a temple of education , A pathway to succeed in the entrance exams , more importantly in life to be a better person, be a best in their self . Sir remains to be a visionary, a mastermind, a great teacher, a great mentor, a great motivator . He will always remain in our hearts with a blissful smile asking us to take down the next problem

From Usha Chinchali:

I offer my heart felt tributes to Master U.V. Chalapati rao garu. Master garu was a great teacher and remarkable person. In my mind he is "just away" while his memories will always be with me. I was introduced to master garu by my sister during my intermediate years when I was having difficulty comprehending physics. Master garu worked with me patiently and helped me gain confidence. Rajyalakshmi madam and master garu loved their students and treated them as family. Master garu always encouraged his students; he even trusted me with the accounting of Gangadhar tutorials when I first started my Chartered Accountancy practice in Visakhapatnam. Later during their visits to USA, both of them took the time to visit me. Sir had several talents and good qualities, but his loyalty and devotion to his family and extended family impressed me the most. I am extremely thankful that God gave me the opportunity to learn from Master garu. Sir, I pray for your spiritual journey. Usha Chinchali

Dear Sirs,

Recently I learnt with great sorrow that Sir has left this world. I undertook coaching from him for IIT JEE 95-96 batch in all subjects. To my amazement, I scored rank AIR 237 in that attempt. I remember Sir came to my flat in Waltair Uplands, congratulated me and took my photograph which appeared in Vizag newspapers. I have in my possession a letter dated 21/06/1996 congratulating me for the success. This letter is signed by U S Rajyalakshmi, MA,MA (Ed), Principal. I cherish this letter very much as it revives in me the memories of Sir teaching Physics and mathematics with such great clarity and ease. I am deeply thankful to him for my success.

After completion of IIT from Chennai , I obtained MS in Electrical Engg from University of California and presently working as project manager with a top world renowned hardware engg company based in California. Without Gangadhar Tutorials coaching, I could never have achieved this success. This is a dream come true for me for which I am extremely grateful to Sir. M Krishna Rao, California.
